Singapore has marked the Chinese New Year in a big way, with its first casino - the $4.7 billion Resorts World Sentosa - finally opening its doors for the first time. The casino, built by the Genting Group from neighboring Malaysia, is the first of two casinos set to operate in Singapore. Genting chairman Lim Kok Thay officially opened the casino on Sunday morning, the day of the Chinese New Year, before allowing the public a glimpse into the lavish complex that includes a Universal Studios theme park, hotels and convention facilities. The new casino is expected to attract both locals and foreigners, although the former are required to pay an admission fee of around $70 to fund a government campaign against gambling addiction. To make sure gambling stays safe, entry is limited to those over the age of 21 (as in Las Vegas) and there is a prohibition on automated transaction machines being placed on the casino floor. The second casino set to open is the Marina Bay Sands, which is due to begin operating in April. If the two casinos really take off, it is not out of the realms of possibility to imagine Singapore rivaling another Asian city situated at the tip of a peninsula, the Chinese special administrative region of Macau. Along with Vegas, Macau is one of the world's two unrivaled gambling centers, with 28 casinos in total.
Jackpot City Casino has raised its promotion, with the online casino now offering a free $500 welcome bonus. The bonus can be collected in two installments, with the first $200 given on your first deposit, and the final $300 granted with the second deposit. This latest promotion comes as good news for those chasing one of the online casino's progressive jackpots. The Mega Moolah slot has the biggest jackpot, with prize money having passed $2.4 million and counting. Customers may recall that the same slot once paid out a record prize of more than $8 million. There are plenty of other big jackpots as well, if other games are more appealing. Cyberstud poker has a jackpot of almost $550 million, Major Millions has passed the $300,000 mark, and plenty of other smaller slots are offering between $50,000 to $100,000.
Stanley Ho, Macau's "King of Gambling", denied last Thursday any ties to Chinese organized crime gangs, news agencies have reported. A spokeswoman for 88-year-old Ho issued the denial on his behalf the day after gambling regulators in the US state of New Jersey released a report that accused Ho of allowing triads to operate inside his casinos. Janet Wong said Ho had not seen the report, but considered it a matter for casino regulators and MGM Mirage, which has a partnership with Ho's daughter Pansy in the MGM Grand Macau. "His position on the record is clear that there is absolutely no foundation in any suggestion that he is associated with organized crime and triads," Wong said in an email to the media. Pansy Ho declined to comment, saying through her spokesman only that her father was not a partner in the venture and that the report contained no allegation against her specifically. MGM Mirage sold its 50 percent stake in an Atlantic City casino after New Jersey forced it to make a choice between the east coast state and Macau. According to New Jersey law, companies applying for a gambling license must first prove that they have no association with "notorious or unsavory persons." MGM Mirage says it has "a spotless operating record at MGM Grand Macau."

Singapore won't be appearing in the World Cup, which starts June 11, but that shouldn't stop locals from putting money on their favorite team. Spain, Brazil and England all have strong local support, and are the three teams that look the toughest to beat in South Africa if the odds are any indication. In fact, a Brazil-Spain final is considered the most likely scenario, at 12.00, while a Spain-England final is paying 16.00 A couple of the special aspects of Bwin's World Cup betting are the group and head-to-head specials. Spain is too hot a favorite to win Group H ahead of Switzerland, Chile and Honduras, but the 1.80 odds on it scoring seven goals or more in its three group games must appear very tempting, as do the 1.75 odds on it scoring more goals in the group stage than England does. England faces the USA, Algeria and Slovenia in Group C, so the 3.00 on it winning a perfect nine points from its three games must look pretty good. The most likely option is seven points (two wins and a draw), which is paying 2.75 and would still be good enough for England to win the group. As for Brazil, its group odds are a little longer, given it faces Portugal, the Ivory Coast and North Korea. The five-time champions are 1.75 to win the group, and 3.50 to win nine points. Odds of 1.90 are being quoted on Brazil's attacking style earning it seven goals or more.

A Las Vegas resident has stunned lottery operators and players by winning her fourth multimillion dollar lottery prize in 17 years. A Very Lucky Lady 63-year-old Joan Ginther (a Texan who visits her home state regularly), recently scooped a $10 million prize after winning on a "$140,000,000 Extreme Payout" lottery scratch card. This is Joan's biggest win to date, but her total lottery gains since 1993 add up to more than $20 million. In 1993, Joan bought a "Lotto Texas" scratch card and won $5.4 million - at odds of 1 in 15.8 million. In 2006, a scratch card for the "Holiday Millionaire" game netted Joan a more "modest" prize of $2 million. The odds on that were 1 in 1,028,338. In 2008, a "Millions and Millions" scratch card won Joan another $3 million, at odds of 1 in 909,000. Lost for Words Not surprisingly, Joan is keeping quiet about her embarrassment of riches. But we do know a little bit about her lottery playing habits. Two of her winning scratch cards were bought in the local Times Market Store in Bishop, Texas. Joan's latest win entitles the store to a $10,000 bonus, and the store manager is now keen to point out that his store is clearly a lucky place for wannabe lottery winners to purchase their tickets. Emulating Joan's Success Your chances of matching Joan's impressive record are slim, but trying is a lot of fun! If traveling to Bishop, Texas isn't an option, why not visit one of the lotteries online and buy your ticket there?
More than 5,000 people have been arrested in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in a month-long operation timed to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Local police in the aforementioned countries worked with the French-based international police organization, Interpol to coordinate the raids, which also seized around $10 million and targeted gambling dens that did business by Internet and cell phone. More than 800 gambling dens and $155 million in bets across Asia were disrupted by the raids, according to Interpol, which revealed the extent of its operation to the world media last Friday. In Hong Kong alone, 235 people were arrested and some $361 million in betting slips were confiscated. Large-scale anti-gambling raids have been carried out in China and Malaysia in the lead-up to the World Cup, too. Chinese police announced the arrests of at least 800 people for illegal gambling earlier in July, which Malaysia police arrested 120 people at the beginning of the World Cup. The raids, which took place for the entire duration of the World Cup, between June 11 and July 11, were the third targeting a major soccer tournament. Previously, some 2,000 people were arrested in operators targeting Euro 2008 and the 2006 World Cup.
