Golfer and online poker player Dusty Schmidt was set to challenge in court Tuesday a decision to rescind his amateur golfer status after he offered a $1 million challenge on his Website. The hearing is to be heard in the US District Court in Portland, Oregon. Shmidt has chosen to represent himself in the case. Schmidt, a former golf professional who makes his living as an online poker player, was stripped of his amateur status by the United States Golf Association after issuing a "Million Dollar Challenge" in April through his Website, 10thGreen.com. Under the challenge, Schmidt offered to pay $1 million dollars to anyone who could beat him at 72 holes of golf and at poker. The USGA claims issuing the challenge technically makes Schmidt a professional, rather than an amateur. Schmidt, who played golf professionally until suffering a heart attack at age 23, took up playing poker during his rehabilitation. He estimates that he has earned $3 million playing online poker.

A host of speakers took the floor, each highlighting the findings of research undertaken on gambling in young people and adults. Starting Young In terms of youth gambling, research provided the following data: • A study carried out last year showed that one in three 15-24 years olds gamble.• Of those youths who gamble, a quarter are expected to end up with a gambling addiction.• 3% of 12-17 year olds are currently considered to have a gambling problem. The Adult Addict Some research projects focused on adults and found that: • Four out of five university graduates viewed gambling as a non addictive society activity.• In 2008, one out of every four people in debt, below the age of 30, cited gambling as a cause of their financial situation.• CCS research also profiled young debtors as well educated, married men who may have as much as $150,000 of debt, owed to up to12 creditors. In terms of gambling habits, both generations were asked about their activities. The research found that young people were more likely to take advantage of free internet gambling, sports and skills betting whereas parents favored the lottery. Not much of a problem after all Whilst the figures have alarmed many, the picture is not all doom and gloom. When compared to other countries, Singapore can be seen to have less of a problem, for example, 5% of American youths are purported to have a gambling problem, compared to 3% in Singapore. Taking Action It is hoped that the presentation of this detailed research will have a positive effect as it is only by addressing problems within society that we can begin to counteract them.

Octogenarian entrepreneur Stanley Ho's battle with poor health has increased speculation about the future of the Macau casino industry. The 87-year-old has dominated the casino industry in the Chinese Special Administrative Region, but has recovered to a stable condition since undergoing surgery in August after reportedly tripping and hitting his head at home.As his health has deteriorated, so have shares in his casino firm Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, and it has also led to speculation amongst industry experts about a change in Asia's casino haven.Zeng Zhonglu, a locally based expert in the casino industry, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying: "Since Macau opened its markets to foreign investors the era of Stanley Ho has been diminishing gradually."I don't think there will be another figure like Stanley Ho - that time has gone."According to AP, SJM's share of Macau gaming revenue decreased from 74.7 percent in 2005 after the first foreign-run casino on the peninsula opened, to 39.9% in 2007.However, these numbers are still significant in what is arguably the biggest casino haven on the planet. After opening its doors to foreign casino operators, Macau overtook Las Vegas in the number one position in 2006 to take in an estimated $6.87 billion in total.
Poker professionals Maria Ho and Tiffany Michelle have teamed up to take on 11 other teams in the 15th season of the successful reality television show The Amazing Race. Taiwan-born Californian Ho and actress-turned poker pro Michelle missed out on the 2009 World Series of Poker to participate in the program, which began filming in July and began airing in the United States on Sunday. The two got off to a slow start in the first leg, narrowly avoiding elimination after finishing 11th out of 12 in the race from Los Angeles to Tokyo. However, they improved in the second leg from Tokyo to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to move up to seventh place out of the 11 remaining teams. Ho, 26, was the last woman left in the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event, when she finished 38th out of a field of more than 6 thousand players. She is 37th on the women's all-time prize money list. Michelle, also from California, finished 17th at the Main Event in 2008, and has had two money finishes on the World Poker Tour. The poker stars are up against some tough competition, including the Harlem Globetrotters' "Flight Time" and "Big Easy," in a series that will see them travel through Cambodia, the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Estonia and the Czech Republic on the way back to the US for the grand finale in Las Vegas.
