Will Australia Regulate Online Gambling?

Australia and the United States have gone down similar paths when it comes to online gambling legislation, but that could all be set to change if a new recommendation by an Australian commission into the industry is taken into account by the country's federal government. The report which calls for the overturning of the Australian federal government's 2001 Interactive Gambling Act and for the government to consult with the country's eight states and territories to "initiate a process for the managed liberalization of online gaming." The Interactive Gambling Act is similar to the US government's 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Like the UIGEA, the Australian law made it illegal for companies to offer online gambling in Australia, although it did not specifically ban Australian citizens from playing on those sites, meaning that many Australians still use poker and gambling websites without being prosecuted. However, there may be a better chance of Australia overturning online gambling laws than in the United States, given that Australia is much more relaxed than the US when it comes to laws on gambling in general. The Australian government is not bound by the commission's report, but as a general rule it takes its recommendations very seriously. And given the public debate the report has sparked, we will undoubtedly hear more about online gambling in Australia in the coming months.

The Mental State Of Singaporean Gamblers

The Institute of Mental Health is about to undertake a 12 month national mental health survey using a representative sample of 6,500 Singaporeans. The survey not only endeavors to identify the level of mental fitness amongst the nation but will also delve into the impact of mental health disorders on individuals who engage in online gambling and their families. Challenges Known but Effects UnclearAssociate Professor Chong Siow Ann, the Vice Chairman for Research at the Institute said, "The challenges to the mental well-being of Singapore residents, such as increasing divorce rates and an ageing population, are growing, but the impact of mental illness in Singapore is not well-understood. This study aims to give us a clearer picture of the mental-health scene in Singapore." Wider, More Social RemitThe last national survey was carried out in 2004 and focused on depressive and anxiety disorders; finding that adult Singaporeans have a 5.6% risk of developing depression and a 3.4% risk of developing anxiety in their lifetime. The report was given due credence and lead to the National Mental Health Blueprint, a five year plan, being developed by the Ministry of Health in 2007. This new study is more comprehensive, looking at screening for a range of disorders, including more social manifestations such as gambling addiction and nicotine dependence.

New Microgaming Casino Slots Launched

Jackpot City online casino has continued a massive month with the addition of three new Microgaming slots - Scrooge, Buffet Bonanza and Tribal Treasure. The festivities began with a new promotion in which the casino is offering customers 25 free into their gaming accounts, deposit free. And they're continuing with the new slots, which add to the more than 400 games already available on Jackpot City. Tribal Treasure is a slot with a jungle theme - characters include a native, a golden idol and monkeys, as well as several numbers and letters. The native plays the largest role, as he fills in for all the remaining symbols aside from the idol, which comes up only in the middle reel. However, the idol serves another purpose - players win 10 free spins if the idol appears on their screen 10 times. Tribal Treasure also has a feature in which players can double up or even quadruple on their takings. To go for that option, players much choose a color or suit, with the correct color doubling the winnings and the correct suit quadrupling it. Scrooge is based on the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, while Buffet Bonanza is a slot machine with a food theme.

Times Are Looking Good in Macau, Vegas

If recent events are any indication, an economic upswing is taking place in both Macau and Las Vegas, the two casino meccas that were stung harshly by the global financial crisis. In Macau, shares of casino operators rose on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange last week on the back of reports that gambling revenues in the Chinese territory rose an impressive 59 percent from 12 months earlier to $1.55 billion. Shares of Sands China rose around 5 percent, while shares in Wynn Macau climbed up to 7.3 percent. Local tycoon Stanley Ho's flagship firm, SJM Holdings (SXE), clime up to 5.1 percent for a three-week high. Things are also looking up in Las Vegas, where the MGM's new CityCenter project is expected to start bringing gamblers back. The center's main attraction, the Aria Resort and Casino, is scheduled to open in under two weeks, on December 16. For now, the Vdara and Mandarin Oriental hotels have already opened. The Vdara is the larger of the two, with 1500 rooms, while the Mandarin has more than 225 condominiums and a little less than 400 hotel rooms. Restaurants and shops in the CityCenter's Crystals mall also opened up last week. The project did not always look like coming to fruition, given the uncertainty caused by the financial crisis - MGM's joint venture with Dubai World looked likely to go bankrupt at stages last year, but has since recovered miraculously.

Las Vegas Sands to Open Singapore Casino

The Las Vegas Sands Corporation is on track to open its casino resort at Marina Bay by the end of March in the new year, Chairman Sheldon Adelson said on Monday. The billionaire American acknowledged in an interview with CNBC news channel that there would be some possible delays due to rain, but said at the very worst the opening would be postponed by only "a couple of weeks... not months." The company had originally hoped to open their Singapore casino by the end of 2009, but missed that target because of a shortage of raw materials and labor. The cost of the project was originally supposed to be some $3.2 million, but has since blown out to around $5.5 million. Rival Genting is now expected to open its new Resorts World Casino at nearby Sentosa before the Las Vegas Sands opens its doors at Marina Bay. But no doubt the battle between the two for supremacy in the local gambling market will continue well beyond 2010.

Massive New Project for Singapore Gambling

And the real spice being added to the mix is the addition of the casinos and theme parks, soon thereafter. Big casinos are on their way Not a country to miss a trick, Singapore is riding the wave that has broken the recession and is pushing hard for Resorts World Sentosa to open up Universal Studios Singapore - pending their license approval. But to mimic that mega-effort is the inimitable Las Vegas Sands casino which is constructing the other project. The Las Vegas Sands casino suffered a trip-up in 2009 but has now gained momentum to the tune of $3 billion, and they are surging ahead with plans to kick start the undertaking. And to cap it off, a marine life park which is the biggest in the world, a maritime museum, a luxurious spa and two more classic hotels will be opened after 2010. The Genting Group development will cost Genting Group at a cost of $4.4 billion. These big efforts are all geared towards increasing tourism and bringing in gaming revenues.

"Nothing keeps me awake at night because I believe in the cycle of business... and I got to make sure I'm prepared to go forward."
